Montreal Consulate K 1 interview

Quick facts: closest decent hotels are the Soffitel, Cantlie, both about 20 min walking, 6 min car. There is a parking lot across the entrance to the consulate, $15.00. A coffee shop on the ground floor of the front of the building, muffins, coffee etc, opens at 6 AM

I was scheduled for 9 AM, I showed up at 8:30 and people were already lined up and heading in. Eastern European private security guards, who took themselves way too seriously. A quick check of the waist....heck they weren't even packing. The Gulag guys were being a bit too fastidious but ticked me off when one goof decides to ask me... "what's this?" Stunned I say..."its a key" "for what?" my thickheaded defender of freedom asks.... "A BMW 745 that's parked just across the street" Granted this key looks a bit unconventional but its still resembles a key. Another guy, perhaps the Gauliter comes over and starts banging it on the desk.... annoyed I say "you break it It'll cost you probably a weeks wages to buy another." Ham hands decides to perhaps not tempt fate and takes th key and other fobs off my keychain.... They give you a receipt and keep this for safekeeping.

You proceed downstairs and take an elevator up to the 19th floor. To condense a rather mundane day.... you get a ticket - mine was C14 a mass crowd checks a overhead LCD screen as if it was off track betting and this was the big one! Your number gets called a bunch of times and you get up and sit down a whole lot, like a Catholic service, just no priest.

Odd, you speak to everyone through Lexan glass and talk on amplified speakers, talk about very impersonal. Understandable at a bank.... Consulate...not so much.

Nice view from the 19th floor but that gets old after say the 3rd hour of sitting! As noon approaches hunger starts to weigh heavy... you start staring at the three vending machines, like a TV screen but the images don't move. I started playing a memory game... close my eyes... "top row, Mars, BBQ chips, Snickers... no wait that was Mars, BBQ chips, Pretzels.... 12:30 I get called for the "interview" nice disarming lady asks me a bunch of questions in this little room. Weird, there is a chair in the room but you interview standing up talking through the glass..... I got the impression the line of questioning was directed at finding out if this was a marriage of convenience... Odd given that I have lived in Canada all my life and have it pretty darn good here.

I understand this place closes at 2 PM and I was out of there by 1 PM. There didn't seem to be any order as I left before a couple that was there prior to my arrive had their interview.

Anyway, you walk out of there thinking..."man that was a day I'll never get back in my life"

Most people are in and out pretty quick. Maybe they didn't like your line of "costing a weeks wages" lol congrats

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
