There has been plenty of discussion about various ways of sending money from here to Vietnam. And now, for something completely different, what is the best way to send money from Vietnam to here?

Boy you can really hear the crickets chirping in this post!

Personally, I would only trust Western Union. You two may want to go to this restaurant in Des Moines and ask them how they have been transferring money:

Thanks for the tip. We have yet to venture out on the town after I took her to that Mexican restaurant--big mistake!

I guess we are the only ones on this board with a weird enough situation that we would like to send money from Vietnam to the U.S. What is more, Mai's family is of a generation where you don't put your money in a bank, so there are no banking connections anywhere. We're either going to have to get creative, or just wait until we come back to Vietnam and physically just take the money with us.

On a side note, Mai had her first online shopping experience today. She seemed fascinated by the ease of it all. We bought some cookie sheets from Amazon.

I haven't tried but I think you can use any of the money transfer companies to do send money from Vietnam to the US. Most of the transfer services go thru Techcom Bank, Sacombank, Vietnam International Bank (VIB), Phuong Nam Bank (PNB), and VIP 24. If they don't, you can send a wire but that can cost $20-30 in fees.

Better watch her! I think I'd also brief her on the abundance of scams out there. There seem to be more than ever these days.

It depends... How much money are we talking about here? In the 100k's ? As mentioned above, anything under 10K's you don't have to worry about it... between you and her combined that's $20K.

However, some people have done it this way... say: I need to send $50K to my family in Saigon, you need to bring $50K to the US. We agree to do an event "swap", my $50K will go to your US bank, your $50K will go to MY family in Saigon. Money never left the country, no need to worry about bringing overseas. The problem you may face is how to deposit a huge chunk of cash in your bank :) DISCLAIMER: This is not in anyway to encourage "money laundering" :) Just for Discussion purposes!

Hehe, I wish I needed to transfer that much money! No, we're only talking a few thousand. Now suddenly, Mai seems so confident about the transaction. I've learned not to ask questions when she gets like that. I will let you know more when I know more.
