Police Records

Indian Police Clearance Certificates should be obtained as follows:

  • All Indian IV applicants aged 16 and above, residing in India, should obtain police certificates from the local Passport Office. These are usually more dependable than those obtained at a local level and indicate that the subject had no serious criminal convictions on record at the time of passport issuance. Applicants whose Indian passport was issued within the past six months may present just the Passport Office Police Certificate, and need not obtain additional police clearances.
  • Applicants over age 16, whose passports were issued more than six months previous to visa application, must also obtain a police clearance from the District Police Office serving the applicant's place of residence.
  • Indian passport holders applying for visas outside India should obtain a statement from their local embassy or consulate confirming they have no criminal record.
  • Non-Indian IV applicants residing in India should obtain police certificates from the District Police Station serving their area of residence.
  • Indian police certificates are not available for foreign (non-Indian) applicants applying outside India.
I have read many have had difficulty with getting PCC's with out interview letter, I think if you know some body or know how to ask you should be able to with out difficulty. my husband managed to get his PCC with out any proof of visa application or pending interview. this was Vizag office Edited by indianheart

Yoke, what Indianheart says is correct. Since your wife's passport's issue date would be less than 6 months before the "actual interview date", she needs PCC only from the passport office. However, make sure interview happens within the 6 months after the passport issue date.

To get PCC from Passport office is damn easy. Fill out an application form available there, pay Rs.300, show her passport and get the computer print-out. You don't need any other letter.

However, if you review the format, here it is:

Here is the request format:

Month Day, Year

To Whomsoever It May Concern

I, <Full Name>, the citizen of the United States (holding the U.S Passport# nnnnnnnn), would like to sponsor my spouse <Full Name> (beneficiary) as an immigrant to the United States.

As part of this immigration process, I have filed her I-130 (Petition for Immediate Relative) with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and this petition has been approved on <Month Day, Year>. To proceed for her immigrant visa (Green Card), beneficiary’s many original documents have to be submitted to the National Visa Center (NVC) at New Hampshire, United States. And one of them is Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from the Passport Office and the Police Station, if the beneficiary is aged above 16 years.

Please review the attached I-130 Approval Notice from the USCIS.

NVC has some pre-requisites in the format of PCC and I hope you would be able to issue the same in the required format.

• It must be in English and must be on the official stationery with the seal and signature of the respective authority

• It must cover the entire period of the applicant’s residence at <Provide address here>

• It must state what the appropriate police authorities’ records show concerning the beneficiary, including all arrests, the reason for the arrest(s), and the disposition of each case of which there is a record. If there are no records, specify it clearly.

I kindly request you to issue the original PCC for her as soon as possible to proceed with her visa. Any help on this matter from you would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns on the above matter, please do not hesitate to contact me at 001-nnn-nnnnnnn or at the address specified below.

Thanks

I think that all depends on the people you are dealing with...my husband had to wait for the PCC from passport office. I dont beleive there is a lot of consistancy in indian government offices.

Exactly true! USCIS does not have consistency, then how can we expect it from Indian offices ???
