Curious About USCIS Customer Service

This question is just out of curiosity because i'd like to know the answer. I realize that when you call the USCIS Customer Service Line there are nice people, mean people, and everything in between. My question is...assuming that you get the kindest most sympathetic person ever and you have a problem with your case, is there anything they can actually do? I'm really curious if they can actually do much else than change your address. Has anyone actually had someone go out of their way to call or write a letter or make a service request or anything? I know they cant just approve you right then, so it just seems to me like they really dont do much??

the 1-800 people are just a call center.. they even told me that.. all they can do is "look up your case and create a service request or expedite"... they can't approve your case.. several of them told me (including a supervisor) that my case was WAY overdue, but they couldn't do anything because they don't have my petitions..

The customer service reps at USCIS simply read from manuals. They know less about the immigration process than most of us do. Like the previous poster said, they are simply call center workers and are not very knowledgeable about the process at all.

We were given very bad information from a service rep while we were waiting for our I-129F petition to be approved. We saw an immigration lawyer after getting the advice from the service rep, and it turned out we would have screwed ourselves terribly if we had taken their advice.

Here is my story. I've lived problem free life, payed my taxes. One day I decided to marry this girl. But to do so would require her to come to US of A, and so it started. My problem free live turned in to free problems from USCIS! Sure things turned to unsure, certain dates turned to aproximation within months. All logical thinking was out the door, as I filed my papers withing famous Vermont Centre!

I have definitely received some contradicting information from different reps. This seems to happen when I ask a question that puts them off script. It seems to help some if I work through the entire phone menu to get to exactlt the right person, and then luck out and get some one with some experience on the job. Always a ####### shoot though.

Wow, can't believe that much misinformation is given. I have found the people not to be very informed at all. Even when I went into the San Bernardino office, I was so fustrated when I was going to file my I-130 because the guy was an idiot and didn't know more than what I have already read. I took it upon myself to be as honest, forthworth, and made sure my I's were dotted and my T's were crossed. I was not going to use an attorney, because I am well read. But I can understand some things can be abstract in each and every person situation.

The whole process has given me a great interest in immigration matters as a whole. I would use the fine resources here on this website than speaking to the customer service people, because they are just there for a pay check.

It's useful for former permanent residents who need their I-130 case to be updated as a result of naturalization.

I also made service requests, however, when my case was long overdue, but I never had a response to any of them. It's unlikely they can provide reasons as to why your case is overdue. For that kind of information you need to contact you congressman or senator or know someone who has contacts inside USCIS.
