Can anyone tell me what the charges are for filing these applications to bring my wife back to the USA? Are there any surprizes waiting for me that I should know about? Is there a separate charge for each document?

Where do you live right now?

You might want to check out the different visa options under "guides" on this site. The fees differ depends on which route you choose.

Surprise: it takes more than buying an air ticket then hop on the plane. :-)

As PP said, fees will differ depending on what visa you get./ whcih route you go. Also the medical fees can vary widely.

For me, doing IR-1 via DCF, it'll be about 1600 dollars all in.

I'm in Russia and planing on filing DCF with form I-130. I have read that the fee to file the I-130 is $355 but I am wondering what other future fees could be associated with the process. Hmm?

If I am refused the DCF option for some reason, perhaps I will try a K3, but I wont know this until I try filing, they tell me.

One of my main concerns is that I am not sure of my future, and may again have to file to have my wife move to Australia with me, as i am a duel citizen of US and Australia. Which, I assume, I will have to start the process all over again only for Australia instead. I really wish there was a way to take her to the USA for six months to a year temporarily, while I clear up loose ends, before deciding to file for immigration. We don't really want to file for immigration until we are sure of the country we will stay in and this depends on employment for me. But I don't see any other way of keeping her with me while I figure out where I will live permanently. Any opinions on that?

$1600 ? What will that break down to exactly? The initial application is only about $355.

and I also found out this:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3178.html

Is there a fee to review the Affidavit of Support at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad?

No. When the I-130 and subsequent Affidavit of Support (AOS) form listed above is filed abroad, at a U.S. embassy or consulate, this fee is not charged.

I included all direct costs, not just the filing fee, as there are many other costs people sometimes forget. It breaks down as follows:

- $355 to file the initial I-130, then I was told another $355 at the interview.

- $300 approx for the medical (including x-ray, bloot tests etc).

- $150 for certifying/ notarising various documents.

- $100 for police certs from Switzerland and Ireland.

- $100 for translating birth and police certs.

- $100 for valuation of our apartment (we are using assets rather than income for the affidavit of support).

- $50 for US style passport photos (horribly expensive here!).

- $50 for registered mail.

- $40 for assorted costs (photocopying, printing photos of us etc).

You left out the visa fee. Isn't it $400 now?
