Does the US have anything like EI you can apply for if you lose your job?

There is unemployment benefits, but I think you have to qualify or something like that. The difference is that in Canada, EI is paid through deductions on your paycheque and through the government, here employers have to pay half and I am not sure where the rest comes from.

Yep.. they sure do.. but it's state run I believe.

my hubby received it this past year when he quit his job when he wasn't being paid anymore. We looked into it for me (i was working at the same place) but i was not eligible due to having not worked enough weeks here in the State. I think here in CT you needed a full year of employment in the State.

It seems easier to get than back home. In PEI unless you were a fisherman or a farmer you had to fight for it. Brent made a quick 15 min call and he was up and running! :)

My hubby also got a week's UI when his plant shut down.. it was a very simply process and the check came SUPER quick.

2009-08-25: Received card in the mail

Naturalization

2012-08-20: Submitted N-400

2013-01-18: Became Citizen
