What country are you from? Your profile lacks that detail. Please update: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...rCP&CODE=01

Canada recognizes the I-551 green-card and will let lawful permanent residents of the USA enter without a visa, no as for expired green-card I am not sure if Canadian POE will treat the extension letter as green-card, and may require a visitors visa if your home country and Canada dont have a visa waiver program. If you are a Canadian, then this is not an issue at all.

And the USA POE WILL let you re-enter the USA using expired green-card and extension letter.

Canadian officials should recognize the NOA extension letter and expired green card as proof of your Permanent Residency. US authorities coming back definitely will.

I have just sent an email to the Canadian consulate in Denver asking them the same thing. We are planning to be in New York and are thinking of driving over to Niagara Falls for a couple days. She has her expired greencard and the extension letter (still waiting for the 10-year card). I will post what I hear from them. (She has her Colombian passport and Colombians require a visa for travel to Canada (but not greencard holders).)

They were really quick in responding. I had a cup of tea after I sent the email to them and this is what I got

As mentioned on the website http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp

Visas are not required for: "persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence; "

So I would suggest your wife carry all documents with her; expired Green Card (assuming she is still in possession of it), letter from USCIS of extension, and valid passport. If she has a driver's license, it wouldn't hurt to have that as well. All documents to prove her identity, US status, and citizenship.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions or concerns.

So, I will print this email and carry it along with her grrencard (expired) and the extension letter and her driver's license.

Should be all Ok.

(as an aside, I've generally found CIC officials much more "clued" than their USCIS counterparts)

I wrote the canadian embassy in boston and this below was their response. I want to believe i will be safe for my travel i will carry this email with me. Please weigh in.

Dear Spencer

Citizenship and Immigration Canada's website states that "persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence" do not require a visa in order to enter Canada. A valid I-551 stamp in your passport is usually accepted in lieu of a green card. As long as the NOA I797-C is an official document providing proof of your permanent residency status in the USA and is accompanied by your expired green card, you should not require a visa to enter Canada. However, the ultimate decision will be made by the Canada Border Services agent at the border.
