A couple of questions

Hi All,

I was wondering if anybody could help me. I have my interview next Friday (June 6th....Get in! Only 4 months after sending the I-129F) and I have just realised that my passport is due to expire in October 2009. I know that is still over a year away, however, I was wondering how difficult it is to apply for a new passport overseas? It is obviously too late to apply for a new one now, but will need to get a new one whilst in the U.S. now.

Secondly, I will be arriving in JFK (in August if all goes to plan) and spending a few days with a mate before heading down to Nikki's. I understand this is the only place you can get a temporary work permit, does this authorize me to work immediately after receipt or do I need any documentation? I used to chef in restaurants and I have a buddy who says his restaurant will be happy to give me some casual work until I have my status adjusted and find permanent work.

Third, (and yes, I know I only said "a couple of questions") when I eventually come to adjust my status, I would like to apply to leave the country as I would love for Nikki and I to come back to the beauty that is Essex for Christmas. Is this relatively painless?

Thanks for this, I am not sure if I have posted in the right forum so feel free to move me around

Not a problem, once you are in the USA you can renew your passport through the UK embassy in Washington DC by mail. http://www.britainusa.com/sections/index_n...i=10080&d=1

The EAD stamp only allows you to work for 90 days after entry, after that and you will need EAD card or Green-card to continue working.

NOTE: K-1 is not a work visa, it is a fiancee visa for entry to the USA and marriage, K-1 is "Work Auth" primarily to be able to get the SSN, some states are strict in their interpretation of a federal law that requires persons applying for a "license" to have SSN, this can cause a problem with marriage license if only one person has SSN and the other (the K-1 holder) does not.

Yes, applying for a travel doc is not hard, just file I-131 along with the rest of the AOS paperwork. AP (I-131) tend to take 90 days or so to get approved.

You can contact the nearest UK embassy in USA (google for it) and apply there when you are ready to get a new passport. You will need a SS number to work even after the authorization, so look for one in your home area and apply about a week after arriving - it may take 2 or 3 weeks to get (If you already have one - then you are good to go). You can apply for AP when you get married and apply for AOS - generally it takes 2 or 3 months, so it all depends. Good Luck

Note: there is only one UK Embassy in the USA that is in the nation's capital, all others are Consulates.

Embassies for any country in any other country are always in national capitals only, all other locations in other cities are consulates.

There is only one Embassy for each country and it is typically located in the host country's federal capital (ie.. Washington DC).

A country may have remote Consulate General offices located in other major metropolitan areas around the host nation...

YMMV

I wouldn't say not a problem either. If it is anything like I've seen in renewing the Jamaican passport through D.C., it's a little more complicated then expected. First of all, Jamaica would not accept any Walgreens passport pictures. They recommend The Picture People or Sears and ended up accepting Sears. And, it takes a lot more time to process then I imagined......months and months.

So, while it can be done, please allow additional time for any problems that may crop up and for the processing in general.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast
