Hello again!

I wanted to ask a question about getting a SSN.

I went with my fiance to the local SSN office yesterday and I was unable to get a SSN in California under K-1 Visa.

I was told that K-1 Visa holders are non-immigrant and we cannot get a SSN until we get the EAD approved.

My question is how come some VJ'ers were able to get their SSN.

Thanks.

Doc.

Others get SSN because their SS office knew what they were doing. Yours doesn't unless you had less than 2 weeks before the I-94 expired.

LOTS os SS office don't know what's happening.

Go to another one if you can.

K1 denied, K3/K4, CR-1/CR-2, AOS, ROC, Adoption, US citizenship and dual citizenship

This post is similar to your situation: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16800

Copy and paste the link to educate the social security employee. I have read where K1 visa holders were not allowed to get a SSN after marriage.

I don't have the information readily available, but what I did was printed out the SSA regulations, which state that K1 visas holders may be issued a SS number. I also printed the immigration information that stated the same thing. We live in Southern California and we didn't have any problems. In fact, I didn't need any of the back-up information that I printed in order to plead our case. I tell you the truth, this process, at times, is more about being lucky than good. Gssss!!!

Cheers!!!

I was surprised why u didnt able to get one... where state you are? coz were here in North Carolina, and they don't have any questions why i need SSN, and i received mail already from the SSA yesterday that I will receive my card within two weeks...

i applied for my married name so that I will not come back when I have EAD/greencard.

maybe the officer that you spoke don't really know?

Try to call their office and speak to someone else,,, .. if they have the same answer.. maybe that's the policy of your state?... and u need to wait til the ead or greencard to apply for SSN.

Some SSA personnel don't really know what they are doing. Follow what other's have said... educate them.

 yup you should talk to somebody w/ higher authority, and while doing that, print the regulation/requirements to show them that your wife has all the papers that she needed to get the SSN... i was being denied too before but i stood my ground and showed them the requirements that needed and the paper that i showed them came from their office itself (so how can they deny me when their requirements shows that im qualified lol)... so i hope you'll have a success on this one!!! good luck and God bless!!!

Your wife is not the only who had problems applying for SSN after getting married. Some SSA personnel don't know what they're doing so talking to a manager or a supervisor and explaining to them everything might help you. Others suggested to go to a different office, apply using maiden name without telling them about the marriage and then have the name changed once the GC or EAD has received.
