Is it ok for a 4-5 month old baby to travel a long flight?

l'm planning to travel soon after I give birth to be with the father of my baby. He's from NY, USA by the way and I'm from the Philippines. I'm gonna fly from here to Japan, then from Japan to NY. The whole trip will approximately take 20-22 hours including time in between flights. Do you think I can handle it? This will be my second time to go there but my first to travel with a baby. I don't really know what to expect. I know it's gonna be hard. I would only get economy class ticket and I'll have the baby sit on my lap. Let me know what to expect. Thanks.

P.S.

The baby and I will fly most probably during winter season around December and January cuz my due date is August 26, 2008 and I still have to get our baby a Consular Certificate of Birth Abroad and a US passport.

bump! anyone out there?

Hi shai, sorry i can't answer that right now..but in our case we plan to have my fiance pick us up here then we will travel together with baby because i know it will be hard to travel alone especially that you'll be carrying baby car seat.

I'm also planning to leave by september which my baby will just be 3 months old lang.

Hi Shai,

First, congratulations, you will be a mother soon.

I don't see any problem bringing your baby as long as you have all the documents ready. As for the trip, there are a lot of "TIPS" you can find online, just search for it on how to handle babies during the flight. I remember when I went to Australia, a Filipina had a baby with her, although it was only an 8 hour flight from the Philippines but the baby was so behaved ( about 7 months old ). I am also very sure that the flight attendants will be more than willing to provide you with all the help you can. Just make sure that your baby is very comfortable all the way ( dry diapers, food, toys ) At that age, most babies just sleep.

Very important: when you check in, make sure you ask for a seat where a baby table ( im not sure how they call it ) is in front of it , big planes for international flights have these so you dont have to carry your baby all the way. Bring a comfortable bassinette ( where your baby can sleep) and small pillows too.

Goodluck on your journey.

Hey Shai

Were from NY too.. We just flew last month from the Philippines to NY, my wife, me and my 2yrs old daughter. Well I don't know if you can relate to our experience since we have a toddler which is actually harder, cause their use to being outdoors and you gotta cheer them up play with them so they don't get bored.

Our flight is similar to yours.. On our part we had to stop @ South Korea (Seoul Incheon)

So here is my thoughts to you.. On Boeing 747 flights they offer crib for less than a year old babies. So as soon as you get on the plane you have to speak to a flight attendant and request for this.

Upon check in, tell the people at the check in desk to give you a seat where there is an attachment crib.

Also It is advisable to bring a stroller with you, due to the long walk @ the airports on connecting flights. They will take the stroller @ the gate of the plane, and they will return in to you when you get off including stop overs.

As for food.. You need to bring that with you on boarding the plane, no worries about water they provide it on the plane. Just bring the powder milk and the bottles..

Good Luck, if you have any concern or question you can always PM me.

Congratulations on your upcoming delivery!

I'm not sure how much of a concern this will be for infants but when my son and I came over on that long trip, he developed an ear ache due to the changes in pressure. Perhaps you can also look into what can be done to prevent this happening to an infant seeing as they can't really tell you if their ears hurt.

they say thats the best time to give a bottle is during take off and landing cuz the sucking helps with the pressure in the ears.

This is really funny..i'm quoting myself..

But that was before i gave birth and now my son is here, we plan to leave this september 25...

Now i could relate to Shai :help: i will be travelling alone with my son..

I will be having a luggage, a diaper bag carry on, a laptop, my packet and xray..and my 3 month old baby

Wondering how could i manage these..still researching on what to do..so far i could ask for assistance at NAIA, ask for bulkhead set with bassinet, bring stroller (is an umbrella type stroller required? or any stroller will do?).

Thanks!

i'm gonna be having the same prob soon. but the arrangement will be a little different since my husband will pick us up. i'm due to give birth on Monday and as soon as we get the baby's CRBA and passport approved, we'd fly to Cali right away. our target month would be november. the baby will be about 6-8weeks by then.

i'm gonna have one carry-on luggage, laptop, visa packet, xray film (on tube), baby bag and a sherpa carrier for my chihuahua. whoa! i can't imagine traveling without my husband. :P

question: has anyone inquired if PAL has the bulk head seat? i'd try to give them a call tonite or tomorrow to check. then i'll post whatever answer i may get from them. thanks co-VJs. :)

PAL provide a bassinet but u have to call them and reserve it asap.We went to PI last may and our baby that time was 4 mos old.We didnt had prob, she just slept the whole flight (lax-mla).

I"ll be coming back to PI this sept 4 (lax-mla), and this time just me and the baby. She's now 7 mos old and my problem is i dont think she'll fit on pal bassinet plus she moves around.Im scared that she might fall from the bassinet table if i will fall asleep.Do you think guys that they'll allow me to bring the car seat on the plane?i dont think i can put her on my lap for a 16 hrs flight
