Howdy!! I realize one has to send photocopies of 3 years of tax returns (wil send in 2008,2007,2006), but what parts of the tax forms? Just the 1040 or does one have to mail in all the schedules and forms as well?

As well i know it doesn't say it, but should the paperwork be notarized? or just send in plain old black and white photocopies? Thanks

Scott

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you call the IRS 1-800-829-1040 automated service, a tax transcript for each year can be ordered (no charge) and you receive them in a few weeks. They usually comprise of about four pages and you can photocopy these and send in with your N400. Good Luck.

Forgot to add, I just used normal black and white photocopy and DID NOT have them notorized.

I have copies of my tax forms for all those years, so seems kind of a waste of time and govt resources to send me a transcript when I have them already. But if thats what one has to do. thanks

Does anyone know what sections of the tx forms I should send in? Just the 1040, or the whole thing including schedules and forms?

If you have copies already then don't call the IRS. Send in the 1040 part - what they're really interested in is the first page that shows both you and your spouse filing jointly and living at the same address. If you file as married filing separately, that is ok, too. But they still want to see same address, etc.

For more than 6 years now I've been using Turbotax, and each time we have to file anything with USCIS, I just go into my account and print out new copies of all the filings...easy peasy. B)

I just sent in a copy of the 1040 with that IRS label on it, on the original, leave the signature line blank so my wife and I can sign it that holds true in the legal contract world. A copied signature is not valid, a pen written signature on a copy is. I sent in four years of such returns as a subtle reminder we been married far more than the three year requirement, it's the delays of the USCIS that is causing the delay of our application. She could have been a US citizen over a year ago if they just went by marriage dates.

Just send copies of the 1040 (no schedules unless your income comes from a sources other than wages - then you should include schedule C or whatever other applicable schedule) also include W-2s or 1099s. I file electronically so the form and the copies have no signatures - this has never been a problem. Entiende? Good Luck

He doesn't need W-2s or 1099s - nor schedule C either...just the 1040. Ours were copies, not signed or anything...submit what you have you'll be fine. This isn't about income anymore either - it's about living in a valid marriage to apply for citizenship.

For the I-751 they just loosely mentioned tax returns as an example of proof that you are living together. So we just overlapped our tax returns in our copy machine so just the top IRS label was showing for the last three years, no problem there, just sent in one sheet.

But for the N-400 they explicitly requested tax returns so sent in the last four years of the 1040 copied on both sides and our reasoning for both of us signing the rear was just further proof that we are both living together. I also run a business with a stack of extra forms, I didn't send those in because only my business name is on them.

From what I read on the web on filling out government forms, and discussions with my immigration attorney, best to take these forms, literally. Agreed with my attorney to pay him for submitting my forms, but he surprised me, said it is not necessary, should submit them ourselves. One advantage of using an attorney, they know their was around the USCIS, we don't.
