Hi Guys,

I know this is a Regional Discussion, but I wanted to ask if anyone has filled for their AOS and EAD under a K1 Visa.

If anyone can help me answer some questions. I will greatly appreciate it.

My fiance and I are already in the US since May 2nd and we are having our CIVIL wedding ceremony on May 17th.

I heard the AOS application takes 7 months to process (receive the green card)

My question is can my fiance get her SSN any earlier than filling for the EAD which may take 90 days?

-Doc.

Im on CR1 and will not file for AOS or EAD but I do know for a fact that your fiance can get SSN as soon as she lands on US soil. In her case, since she's already here, anytime.

actually, should wait 1 to 2 weeks after arrival, to give time to be in the system. since she arrived on May 2nd, should be good to go

Hello!

I applied for SSN as soon as we received our Marriage Certificate. The SS card was delivered one week after. The name in the card is still in my maiden name/as written in my passport. The social security officer said I should change/update my record when my application for adjustment is approved or when my status as alien in the US changes. My card says "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization". Although I don't intend to work yet, I need the SSN for driver learner's permit.

Good luck and best wishes to you both!

Hi, We sent our AOS in March, also adjusting from a K1.

My husband was able to get his SSN card after we married but before we filed our AOS. He also got the card issued in his new name. We went to the SS office and brought his birth certificate, passport with I-94, and marriage certificate and we were able to get the card issued in his new name with no problem.

Either way you decide to do it is fine, we just wanted to avoid an extra trip to the office.

Good luck

I applied for my SSN 2 days after my arrival (yeah, that soon) and the officer told me that it will take 10 days before my details will come up to their system but anyway, she got my application and told me that they wil give me a courtesy call 10 days after if my infos are already on their system. Then I got my SSN card on the mail 3 weeks after I filed it. It is in my maiden name and will change name soon but before AOS. Hope it helps...

I came here on K1 and I applied for SSN 10 days after I got here. It's under my maiden name, got the card in 5 days. After we got married, I went back to SSA to change my maiden name into married name, got the card in less than a week. When I received my greencard, I went back again to remove the notation "Valid for Work if DHS Authorized (or something)" and the card took longer this time because my name on DHS record is still under my maiden name while my greencard and SSA's records are under my married name. Glad that everything got straightened out.

You need to give DHS some time to record your wife's arrival because SSA will check/verify her status here in US. Since she's been here for more than 2 weeks now, she can apply for SSN anytime.
