One of the most amazing quotes I have ever read

You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be.

And one day, some great opportunity stands before you

and calls upon you to stand up for some great principle,

some great issue, some great cause.

And you refuse to do it because you are afraid.

You refuse to do it because you want to live longer.

You’re afraid that you will lose your job,

or you’re afraid that you will be criticized

or that you will lose your popularity,

or you’re afraid that somebody will stab you,

or shoot at you or bomb your house;

so you refuse to take the stand.

"Well you may go on and live until you are 90,

but you’re just as dead at 38 as you would be at 90.

And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit. You died when you refused to stand up for right. You died when you refused to stand up for truth. You refused to stand up for justice.”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

From the sermon “But, If Not”

delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church November 5, 1967.

He was assassinated five months later on April 4, 1968.

Haven't we all died a hundred times over?

I do not know but I really thought that this quote was amazing and I had never heard it before. Imagine what life was like back then and standing up for things got you killed... I just thought it was an amazing quote

Oh I love Martin Luther King,

I also love this quote, which I never forget, it reminds me of how the holocaust happened, and a lot of good people said nothing.

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. I love that picture of him with LBJ.

That quote reminds me of the end of this quote from "The Boondock Saints"

Monsignor

And I am reminded, on this holy day, of the sad story of Kitty Genovese. As you all may remember, a long time ago, almost thirty years ago, this poor soul cried out for help time and time again, but no person answered her calls. Though many saw, no one so much as called the police. They all just watched as Kitty was being stabbed to death in broad daylight. They watched as her assailant walked away. Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.

Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name.. You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything.. I know that things are different than they were in Daddy's day, but I still believe what makes a man really hasn't changed... LOL Wow I haven't heard that one in a LONG time, but it really stuck in my brain, eh? :) Thanks for the reminder!

This is both amazing and true.

Most couragous of us could talk the talk AND walk the walk...he was a great man who believed whole heartedly in the power of God, and God gave him that respect on earth.

for you ganja

WORRY

Is there a magic cutoff period when

offspring become accountable for their own

actions? Is there a wonderful moment when

parents can become detached spectators in

the lives of their children and shrug, 'It's

their life,' and feel nothing?

When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital

corridor waiting for doctors to put a few

stitches in my daughter's head. I asked, 'When do

you stop worrying?' The nurse said,

'When they get out of the accident stage.' My

Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing.

When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little

chair in a classroom and heard how one of my

children talked incessantly, disrupted the class,

and was headed for a career making

license plates. As if to read my mind, a teacher

said, 'Don't worry, they all go through

this stage and then you can sit back, relax and

enjoy them.' My dad just smiled

faintly and said nothing.

When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime

waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come

home, the front door to open. A friend said,

'They're trying to find themselves. Don't worry,

in a few years, you can stop worrying. They'll be

adults.' My dad just smiled faintly

and said nothing.

By the time I was 50, I was sick & tired of being

vulnerable. I was still worrying over my

children, but there was a new wrinkle. There

was nothing I could do about it. My

Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. I

continued to anguish over their failures, be

tormented by their frustrations and absorbed in

their disappointments.

My friends said that when my kids got married I

could stop worrying and lead my own

life. I wanted to believe that, but I was

haunted by my dad's warm smile and his

occasional, 'You look pale. Are you all right?

Call me the minute you get home. Are

you depressed about something?'

Can it be that parents are sentenced to a

lifetime of worry? Is concern for one another

handed down like a torch to blaze the trail of

human frailties and the fears of the

unknown? Is concern a curse or is it a virtue

that elevates us to the highest form of life?

One of my children became quite irritable

recently, saying to me, 'Where were you? I've been

calling for 3 days, and no one answered I was worried.'

I smiled a warm smile.

The torch has been passed.

We are so going to get together when our husbands are finally here. Thank you for your words, and how true they are. I always thought, just a few more years, and I won't worry so much. hahahah You never stop, and I love I called you three times, I have had that also. Pray for me, her graduation is this weekend, wonderful right, but then my ex and his mother, and insane brother in law will be there. My mother keeps telling me, only for a little bit, because these people can gets my blood boiling. . First my ex-mother in law is one of those people who can insult you in your face, and it sounds so sugary sweet. Ex-brother-in law, always carries a loaded gun, he even has a permit for this, why does he have a loaded gun; he thinks there are people after him. Oh yea, and this was a man with a masters degree who taught young children for years. Oh the fun I will have this weekend, but the good thing, when I get back there will be some good stories. My husband has 4 children, since my daughter didn’t become a doctor, one of the kids is going to have to take a hit for the team and become the doctor I need. Love you all.
