Got fired today :) Decided to try my luck at border

Hello all

Two bad things:

1. I didn't get a May interview

2. I got fired today (hehehe, I'm not really sad about this one)

So, despited having no money, I've decided to fly down to Orlando to see my long lost hubby on May 5th. I didn't book a return because I plan to stay until I get an interview date and just come back right before the interview.

It really doesn't make sense to stay here and try to find a new job when I will (hopefully) be getting a June interview anyway.

I got a wicked deal for $144 w/tax one way direct from Moncton to Orlando! I'm going to do my medical before I leave, just in case.

Any tips for getting across the border? I'm thinking that the airport will be way less strict than the actual border, so I think I'll be fine.

Catherine

Bring proof of your ties to Canada - you may not have a job but you still have other responsibilities - lease, insurance, utilities, etc. Also, bring a copy of your full application showing that you are waiting for an interview date - in Canada. That is a good guarantee that you are not intending to stay in the US on this trip but will be coming back to Canada to complete the immigration process.

Good luck. I wouldn't say that the airport is an easier border crossing than a land border. Best advice - don't lie or try to hedge the truth but don't offer any unasked for information unless it helps.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Depends on whether or not you get an azzhole. I've known guys with boxes of evidence getting refused and people with virtually nothing going through without incident. Makes no sense whatsoever. Used to be flying was easier on the potential traveller but these days who knows. Good luck.

Oh, BTW, your job sucked!!!!

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3)keep ur response short and to the point, dont tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5)pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isnt going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didnt lie! Refer to #1

Best of luck

Yeah, it really just depends on who you get. Hubby was denied at the Vancouver airport, but we had absolutely no problems with land border crossings.

Just answer the guard honestly, but don't offer TOO much information. Bring as much proof of ties to Canada as you can.

Not having a return ticket can be a red flag (again depending on the guard), so I would suggest having a good explanation in case you are asked.

Good luck and I can't wait to hear about your experience.

When asked purpose of trip make sure you say "visiting my husband", don't say "I'm moving" . . . . maybe that one is obvious

I'm thinking you're right on this as long as you have a return ticket and do as they said, pack light. Be clear and concise on all your answers. My hubby got nailed for saying his visit was going to be "about" three weeks. . . .You probably will have NO problems.

Have a safe trip!

Yes my job did suck!! LOL I worked at a call center and I got fired for hanging up on all the azzholes. . . joke's on them . . . .I made almost $1500 in the few weeks I worked there and barely did any work.

(I'm usually a good worker, but these people treat their employees like #######, I feel bad for all the people stuck working there for years because they have no education and no where else to go. It's very sad. . . worse than McDonalds)

Anyways, I'm sure I'll be fine at the border, I've made it through lots of times before. My only worry is that if they do refuse me, I'll already be in Florida, and that's a heck of a heartbreaker, to be that close and then have to pay for a flight right back. :(

10 more sleeps!!!! :) :) :)

True, it's only on the bus where you get repatriated. At the airport they don't let you even board. :crying:
