ITN number question

Since my tax return money landed in my bank account this week, I assume they finally assigned my wife her ITN (i had sent in all that stuff needed to get it with my paper return).

I haven't got anything in the snail mail yet, and I need the ITN to finish off my state taxes (which are on hold awaiting this number also)... (way it works is I have to mail it in)....

can I get this from IRS? or is it on it's way in the mail? (if anyone's got theirs would like to hear about it).

will be nice to open a joint savings account also.

Yes, I got the paper copy of ITIN, couple of days before the federal refund direct deposit.

Yours will be in the mail and will get soon.

Is it true that if you file for ITIN for your spouse you are not eligible for tax stimulus refund? I know you are not elegible if you file married filing jointly but I thought I also heard that if you request an ITIN for your spouse you are not entitled to that refund. Is this true. I heard another VJ'er say that this is what the IRS told her after she filed her return.

I have a few more hours til I need to get these taxes in the mail and I'm not sure if I want to put the W7 request in there or not. AUGH!!!!!

Here is your answer under ITIN

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179181,00.html

You can claim your tax rebate when you file 2008 retun next year. So, if you are worried about 1 year interest, do not include ITIN now, but that will reduce your rebate check amount.

What? Tell me it's not so. I read before that even filing MFJ with the spouse requesting an ITIN you'd still get the stimulus for one person ($600), just not the $1200 you'd get normally filing MFJ with a resident spouse with an SSN.

Actually I got the number first via phone and then via mail, the way it happen with us, the IRS agent called my husband on the phone while I was on the line with him.

Also you can send in your state taxes without the number, just write ITIN pending and they do the rest.(This is the way I did it- no problem).

We all ready have a bank account together and a credit card.

Good Luck!

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179181,00.html

From your link:

Q: I know some people won’t get a stimulus payment. How do I know if I’m one of them?

A: You won’t get a stimulus payment in 2008, if any of the following apply to you:

* You do not have a valid Social Security Number.

* You are a nonresident alien.

Q. I have an ITIN, but my spouse has a valid Social Security number. Can we get a payment?

A. If you and your spouse file a joint return, you will not get a stimulus payment. If your spouse files a separate return, your spouse may qualify for a payment, based on his or her income deductions and credits.

Q. If I have a spouse with an ITIN and therefore choose "married filing separately" status to qualify for the Economic Stimulus Payment and later on amend my original return to "married filing jointly" status, will I need to return the stimulus payment?

A. No.

So, apparently if you filed MFJ right away, you get NO stimulus. If you filed MFS first, then amend to MFJ, you could get the stimulus cheque for the USC but definitely NOT for the nonresident alien.

WOO HOO! This is just what I was looking for. I was about to not file for the ITIN at all for fear that this too would nix my stimulus payment. but now I know i can and then amend later.

Thanks! Off to the post office---->

Q. If I currently have an ITIN and file my return but later this year get an SSN, can I amend my return to get the payment or will I need to wait until I file my 2008 return to claim it?

A. You will need to wait until you file your 2008 income tax return to claim the economic stimulus payment. [New 4/14/08]

I wonder if this means that even if you filed MFJ you would be eligible to file for it on your 2008 return? Though this stimulus package certainly doesn't take couples stuck in immigration in to count. At the very least the USC should be eligible no matter what. ;(

Please confirm:

I filed MFJ and applied for an ITIN # for my husband. I am being taxed on his foreign wages, so why wouldn't he be able to get the rebate?

Also, just to clarify....

I hope he will be here soon. Hopefully, by the summer. Once he gets here and gets his SS#, we can amend our 2007 tax return...or what?

how do we get the rebate?
