No, it's not up to you. You cannot have your possession preceed you to the US. You bring them over with you, itemized, depending on how you bring them with you. Are you bringing pets? Your vehicle? There are lots of threads in the Canada regional forum specifically on these topics. After your arrival in the US, you won't be able to leave (if you're coming in on a K-1), the country to go back and get your goods either. At least until you have your AP document or GC. If people in Canada are going to be shipping your things to the US after your arrival, there are certain forms you have to fill out in addition to the regular customs forms.

Do a search on Canadians moving to the US with goods, or just drop by the Canada Regional Forum about this issue.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I suppose if you're shipping a house full of belongings using a moving company, the rules would be different but you can ship things that belong to you via normal means anytime you want. It wouldn't be any different than sending something like Christmas gifts.

It didn't occur to me you'd move out of your home and send everything ahead. Sorry.

if your goods arrive in the US and you're not there to receive them, you'll have to pay duty on them... household goods are otherwise exempt if they're for your personal use :)

(of course there are more details and caveats but you can find them out for yourself ;) )

I guess in a weird way this is where coming from Canada is a slight disadvantage - I can ship my stuff from the UK and then go and hang out in Australia for a month and still beat my stuff to the US ;)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.
