I am a Canadian girl with an American fiance. I've been approved for a K1 Visa (waiting for it in the mail)... am I allowed to bring furniture and other bigger pieces in a U-HAUL when I cross the U.S. border?

yes but you need to fill up some special forms.

Also, if the distance is far you might want to consider upack (wich does the driving for you )

I also heard uhaul truck are kinda crappy and that the penske one are more reliable. (but again depending on the distance you have to do)

could you fill up your timeline, so it will help us for mtl statistics ?

yes. You will need to prepare a list of what you are bringing and approximate values of the bigger pieces (especially the electronics). There's also a form to fill out if I remember correctly.

Do a search of the threads in the Canadian forum and you will see a lot of discussions on what is needed to do when you move.

I also would go with UPack --- they're cheaper, you save the drive and the hassle, and they do the customs for you.

Question about moving your personal effects over the border:

A friend of mine is a Canadian Customs officer and told me most likely I won't be able to bring my USED mattress and box spring over the border due to bed bugs. If you had the mattress treated with anti-bed bug stuff, you need to have proof to show them at US Customs. If you're lucky and they decide to check your stuff, they could tell you to turn around and dispose of your mattress in Canada.

Has anyone heard this? Does anyone have a link to the list of items one can and cannot bring across the border when moving?

I used a Uhaul!! No special forms if your bringing the stuff with you!! Just make a very simple list of the contents. You dont have to list every single item, but one can group things together. Depending on where ur goign (and where ur at), a company like Upack may be cheaper. One can get Uhaul quotes online immediately!! And figure about 10 mpg for milage!!

upack have instant quotation also.... but i would suggest that you ask for one and your US fiance also.... (i had like 3 or 400$ difference between the two) i wonder if it's the taxes....

Uhaul really depends on where ur going!!! They can have some great rates, not sure what they base their rates on!! And if ya live in a smal town like I was at the time, my only option was Uhaul!! Guess I could have paid a moving company, but that would have been too much $$$

The Customs dude barely even looked at my list!! He was to busy playing solitaire on the computer,lol

for me, uhaul and upack was about the same price if you take in consideration the cost of gas for the whole trip...

Montreal to los angeles.... is looonnggg !!!!!! and upack do the driving etc...
