My husband has a certified copy of his birth certificate - will NVC accept this? I am confused if certified and original are the same or not. Also, does he send his police certificate to NVC or is that only needed at the interview?

Certified means that the copy was certified to be a true and accurate copy of the original.

For IR-1/CR-1, these things go to NVC.

For K-3 they are brought to the interview.

Your profile shows filed for K-3, yet it sounds like you are doing CR-1. Please correct your profile:

Both BC and PC will be needed at NVC for appointment posts. Certified copy is fine. I plan on sending my wife's certified copy of the birth certificate to NVC, too.

The certified copies must be certified by the issuing authority. For example, my marriage certificate was issued by the Registry of Marriages here so I had to go back to them for a certified copy. A copy certified by someone other than the issuing authority (a notary public or similar officer) is not adequate.
