Driving to Canada - Ontario

I drove to Canada through the Queenston/Lewiston crossing mid March. While I had no problems crossing either way, the Canadian official noticed my greencard expiration date of 3/30/08. So she told me this:

When driving a vehicle with US plates, (as I was), the person must be legal in the US in order to enter Canada.

I'm wondering if Canadian officials are getting tired of us getting stopped at the border going back into the US?

Anyway, FWIW, BE CAREFUL!!! Make sure you have all your documentation when you go home for visits.

Heading Home!

Wow things are sure changing...or Quebec is more lenient.

Two and three years ago, i borrowed and drove U.S.ian friends' cars to Montreal from Maine without a problem.

I was just visiting the States (sailing) and while on the East coast (I lived on the West coast at that time) I wanted to visit.

Hmmmm...sorry to hear of such head-aches.

Bleh.

Apparently the law has always been there that a Canadian citizen cannot drive US plated car into Canada unless they are an LPR in the States. No idea why, but apparently the law has been there a while now.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

It's to stop Canadians from doing cross border car shopping and importing a new car into Canada without paying taxes and such. This way if you don't have the documentation of being a LPR or more, then they can pull you over and charge you tons of money in import fees...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

That is all really surprising.

And now I wonder why I "got away with it".

Perhaps, like usual, (some) guards pick and choose who they will give a hard time to based on nothing reasonable.

It seems like human discernment and human mood are to be blamed.

Hahaha!

I had stopped in the border one time to ask customs about importing a car from the US. (My husband had a car just sitting there, so we thought maybe we could import it up here for me, and I would sell mine to get rid of my payment.. blah, blah, blah... ).. anyway, he told me then, about the importing process, and if we dicided to do it, to make sure my husband was with the car the day we improted it, cuz me being a Canadian, couldn't drive his American plated veh up in Canada, that it was illegal. but I had also heard that years ago, that it was illegal... weird.

In November we sold our Camry to my parents. We drove the car up, left it there, and flew back. Once all the documentation and insurance was in order, my Dad drove it back to the border to officially import it. Neither my husband, nor I, were with the car on the date of importation. I think, perhaps, that the officer may have been mixing up policies when he said your husband has to be with the car. At any given time there are quite a number of Canadians importing US cars into Canada, and they certainly do not bring the owners with them.
