1-Way or 2-Way Ticket Required?

Friends –

My fiancée arrives from Zaporozhye on April 4th. I made reservations for a one-way trip for her. But when I did this, the representative from Aerosvit suggested that there might be a problem at Passport Control because she have a two-way ticket.

I think this person confused the nature and purpose of a fiancée visa, but I want to be certain! Is there an immigration problem with a one-way ticket?

Second question: Does anyone have a checklist of documents needed for the flight over? My fiancee’s child is coming along, also, and I only recently learned that my fiancée needed to carry with her a copy of the father’s permission for the child to leave the country. Anything else necessary? Of course, she will also bear the passport and the visa.

I appreciate all information on these points!

Best Wishes,

Klaatu

[bTW Part 1: We are not looking at the 90-day period as a “trial period” for our relationship – we are definitely planning on marrying.]

[bTW Part 2: I’m still having difficulty navigating the “timeline” and all of those abbreviations. But if it helps, I filed on August 17th and my fiancee’s interview in Kiev was on March 5th.]

1 way tickets are fine as long as you are entering on a K1 visa and not a B1 or B2 visa which is for work or travel, that would be suspicious.

K-1 is an immigrant intent visa, it does not require a round trip ticket, get whatever is less expensive, we used a one way ticket.

This is a very frequent question.

It is nice to meet another person who has had to make the trip to Zaporozhje like I have - My fiancee and I will be travelling from here as well (hopefully in August). I am very interested in knowing your experiences. My fiancee will also be travelling with her son - she has a court order of sole custody, as the father is long gone, and no where to be found. I am fearful that the Ukrainian border control people will make some difficulty for us as well. How old is your fiancee's child?

Two other questions I have - where did your Fiancee request the police report from (IP-1) do you have an address of the ministry? And secondly, can you also recommend an official translator to my fiancee? I hope you do not mind if I mine you for information, but I am very excited to find someone with a fiancee in the same city as mine lives in. Any help and guidence you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

One-way is all you need.

Sounds like the travel agent was just trying to get some cash out of you.

Be sure to check with Consulate to ensure it is not a requirement for your SO's country just in case.

When I bought the ticket(long time ago), I wrote it off on my tax return as moving expenses.

Nice move on a joint return.

I think the question being asked has nothing to do with border control at POE, rather it has to do with the control at the exit point in Kiev. I have heard that they can be very strict about documentation for people leaving the country (especially with their children).

In order to get the police record, your fiancee has to contact the Departments of Information Technology at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Here is the link and, if to scroll down, she'll see the "Adresses of Departments of Information" line. She'll find a phone number she can call in Zaporozhje. It's there. The police record costs around $15 and it takes 2-3 weeks to get it.

http://dit.centrmia.gov.ua/pos.htm

I don't have any info about translations since I did mine in Kiev but I'm sure there are many companies that provide that sort of service. It also may take 1-2 weeks and it usuall about $15 for 2-3 copies of the certified translation.

Good luck :) !

Friends -

Thanks for your responses! I was 95% certain there would not be a problem, but I wanted to hear from an official source. So the American Embassy in Kiev provided me with this response to my message:

Dear Mr. Jones:

Thank you for your inquiry of March 22, 2008. Please be advised that one way ticket is sufficient for a holder of a valid K-1 visa.

We hope this information will be helpful.

Sincerely,

Public Liaison Unit
