Question for everyone. My fiancee had to get a police clearance from Germany because she lived there for two years. this document will obvisouly come in German so she will ned to get it translated. I wrote the United States Embassy in South Africa and they said to either get the German Embassy to do the translation or find a court appointed translator. I wrote the German Embassy and they do not supply translation services, btu will hand over a list of translators upon request. Will the translators we get from the German Embassy work? Has any one delt with get somethign translated? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I do all the translations from German to English myself! The American Embassy does not require a court appointed translator. And the German Police Certificate is easy to translate, because it normally states 'keine Eintragungen' = ' no entries'.

The only thing I need to add to the translations is a statement that you are fluent in both languages ...

If you need that statement, let me know, I'll copy it for you.

So you only need somebody who also speaks and writes German and translates the paper for you and signs off on the translation.

Generally you are not allowed to certify your own translation of your own documents - basic conflict of interest. Each embassy may have its own rules, however. Any of these translators listed by the German embassy will work as long as they are able to certify the accuracy of the translation.
