When you folks say your petition was 'touched'...

...did you find out by accessing the online case status, as in this thingy?

https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/caseStatusSearc...pLE-N-bcOU5qdHr

And if that's the case and you've signed up for automatic case status updates via email (as I have), do they shoot you an email when they touch it? They actually say they "touched" it?

I'm at VSC, and I've noticed a few other VSC folks who got NOA1's after me who've been 'touched' already. I've yet to be 'touched', as far as I know.

(I'll truly be touched when they call and say "thank you for working hard and paying your taxes and in turn our salaries, and for not breaking the law. Here's your wife's visa for the application you sent in a few weeks back. We didn't feel a need to be lazy incompetent bureaucrats and drag our feet for 10 months and keep you two kids apart, so we're giving it to you now. ")

That is funny - good on you, we need more humour around here.

The term is used any time the date the file was last accessed changes. It isn't tracked, as such, on the website and you don't get an email. You just have to notice it - ie: last date accessed (I forget the exact terminology on the display) Feb 30th, then you notice that the last update was March 15th etc, that is considered a touch, someone looked at your file or moved it somewhere.

You might find this thread interesting - a conversation with a former USCIS adjudicator:

Question and Answer Session with a former USCIS Adjudicator

"Keep in mind every time a file changes hands whether its signed out to an Adjudicator or some staff person, its gets "wanded" into the system so they can track who specifically has the file. Each file has a scannable bar code. Sometimes you'd be working a file that has someone else working another component of the file or one of the family members. We would always try to keep family members together and approve them at the same time".

My official "cut & paste" answer regarding "touching"...

"Touching" is meaningless and no big deal. Some petitions get 'touched" and others never do. It only indicates someone had your petition in their hands and made note of it on the database. What truly counts are NOAs (yeah!) and RFEs (Boo!) :)

Use the link you have in your question and you will see register on your left hand side, all you have to do is register with the uscis and add the case to your account with the receipt number you get from them. After you add case to your account it will have all the info like I-130 and last date it was updated every time when they check/change hands your case date will change. Hope this helps.

touched means that when you check with USCIS a new date will appear. All that means is your case was handled somehow.

Good luck :time:
