I'll ask my wife to obtain the police certificate and its translation in Vietnam ahead of time but I don't want it to be expired before the interview at the end of this year. I would like to know how long before it expire.

Anyone has the info? Thanks in advance!

In general most police certs are valid for 1 year. It is best to just wait until NOA2 or NVC sends case to the Embassy before getting it.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

That's what I'm thinking, too. Can anyone confirm that the PC in VN is good for 12 months?

Thats a general rule, but some countries have validity shorter than that. Indonesia is only 6 months for example.

As far as I know, it valid only for 6 months. My fiancée just got it 5 days ago from Police Station (Saigon). She’s now waiting for translation to English (Single Status and Police Cert) and will pick it up tomorrow. Hope it helps.

Thanks all for the answer. Now I know the Police Certificate is valid for 6 months.

The reason I asked is because I want time to be on our side when I tell my wife to apply for PC. In her Provincial Department of Justice, there is a bribe fee on top of the normal fee before one can receive the PC. Without paying $100 bribe, the official won't process the PC. She have verified with a person that just recently applied for PC. Yeah, I know it's outrageous when I first heard about it. It might be different in HCM or in other bigger cities where there's a transparency.

So, I plan on telling her to apply for PC early since time will be on our side. They can throw any delaying excuses, and we can wait  .

My fiancee paid only 100 thousand VND or around 7US$ for the processing fee, and she got her paper after 4 weeks.

In my opinion, best time to apply the CP is when you receive your Package 3, but I guess it is different from place to place.

From what i remembered, I will take less than 2 weeks for you to get it back. This case only happen if you get it done at District 1 in Saigon. For countryside, it will take you a little bit longer. Make sure pay extra money for additional copies. It will not cost you that much. Also, have her pay them to translate it English. Get several copies of her Birth Certificate and translate it to English too. You will need it in the State, you have to send a copy for Green Card application.

Good Luck!

Thanks, that's a nice info to know. Hopefully, the Department of Justice that my wife will apply for PC also has the translation service. I would hate for her to go all the way to Saigon just for translation.

I'll tell my wife about the processing fee exactly like that. I'll post an update if the official demands any extras. As for our case, we went with the CR-1 route so I'll be the one that submit Package 3 (DS-230) on state side. It'll be late summer before she gets another P3 (?) and then P4.

My family and I used to live in South Korea, It was 6 years ago and never come back . I have a police certificate before I left the country ( 6 years ago ). If police certificate only valid for 1 year, should I go to South Korea and ask new police certificate.

Thanks

Thi didn't get her Police or Single Certificate translated, it didn't make a difference at her interview. Getting it translated doesn't hurt but according to the Packet 3/4 instruction letter, translations aren't needed. But HCMC Consulate does seem to make up rules as goes along sometimes.....

A long time ago, translate your Vietnamese Government Official documents into English is a must do when submitting them to HCMC. Rule has since been changed. However, since the cost of translating those documents which seem to me very important in America IF there ever will be a need to "trace of origin" of your fiancé's "legitimacy", you would have these document clearly in ENGLISH not vietnamese. For what it costs to translate them and notarized by So Tu Phap vs. the cost of translating ANYTHING here in the US, I would recommend to get all of her documents to be translated into English just in case.

I had Kim translated the following:

CMND, HS Diplomat, Birth Certificate, Single Status and Employment Reference Letters from her Universities where she has taught. That helps us a lot when she applies for job here in the US.

Just my suggestion,

Chuck and Kim

"You always get what you've always gotten if you always do what you always did."
