K-1 is a Legal Alien Allowed to Work. K-1 is work Auth for the 90 days of the I-94 card, so should file for SSN within the first 76 days after entry to the USA.

Give USCIS 2 weeks or so to update database used by SSA to confirm immigrations status before applying for SSN

NOTE:

K-1 is not a work visa it is a marriage visa, K-1 is "Work Auth" primarily to be able to get the SSN, some states are strict in their interpretation of a federal law that requires persons applying for a "license" to have SSN, this can cause a problem with marriage license if only one person has SSN and the other (the K-1 holder) does not.

I think that is faster if you go to your nearest SS office. I applied for my SSN the same day that I arrived to US and I got the SSN on 10 days. The "mistake" that I did, was to apply as a maiden name, because I filed the AOS as a married name and I have to change my SSN name.

When we got married (dallas Tx) they didn't ask for my SSN for got a marriage license, we only brought our passport as a IDs. Good luck.

Again for citizenship "Legal Alien Allowed to Work" K-1 is work auth for the 90 days of the I-94 card.

We applied for SSN after marriage using K-1, I-94, passport, marriage cert, and birth cert.

Note: many SSA offices wont touch a K-1 holder after marriage because the primary reason for k-1 getting SSN "Getting Marriage License" no longer exists. If this is the case, visit a different office and apply for SSN using maiden name, and later get name changed to married after getting EAD card or Green-card with married name.
