Removing conditions and employment

Hello,

I am a permanent resident in the US, by marriage, and my husband and I are currently filing to have the conditions on my residency removed.

I am employed and work a full-time job for State government.

My greencard expires early April. I plan on sending out my packet by Tuesday (Feb. 19)

My question is: what happens to my employment status / eligibility if I don't receive that extension letter before my greencard expires?

Also: what is your preferred method for mailing the packet to Immigration? USPS? FedEX? Express Mail?

Thank you very much,

L.

I am in the same situation mine runs out at on the 4th May so I am sending mine in around the first week of March, just waiting for my letters from my friends to confirm they know us and we are still together + getting all the money together!

If you haven't already done so, my advice would be to go and change your social security card for an unrestricted one at your local ss office. An unrestricted card along with state issued ID (eg drivers license) is the simplest form of ID for employment I-9 purposes. This combination never expires and therefore never needs to be updated.

What reason do you have to give to get an unrestricted SS number? I know mine says something about working only with permission or something along those lines, so what do I need to tell them as to why I want it to be unrestricted, and what documents should I take with me?

Thanks

If your sending your packet to a PO Box number you must use the regular post office. UPS & Fedex will not deliver to a PO Box. You can have the mail certified so that you get a tracking number & know that it's been signed for.

Good Luck!

Nothing. You're a permanent resident until USCIS says otherwise.

No need to notify your employer - your status does not expire when the green card does.

Your permanent resident card (conditional or otherwise) is reason enough to have the DHS restriction removed.

It's none of their business. As far as your employer is concerned, there is no expiration date - once a

permanent resident, always a permanent resident.

It's in the I-9 Handbook for Employers:

Employers should NOT:

Reverify the employment eligibility of a lawful permanent resident (“LPR”) whose “green card” has expired after the LPR is hired.
