Hmm ours expired, and we didn't need to apply for an extension, the consulate officer in Sweden should automatically do that after they approve your case. We had no problem getting our visa after our NOA2 expired. Ours expired on January 18th, and our interview was on the 23rd. Quite a few people do not have their interviews within 4 months of receiving their NOA2, the consulates are used to dealing with that and should automatically extend them. I am not 100% sure on this, but I do believe it is how it works.

If you are worried about it, call the consulate and see what they have to say (1-3 PM Mon thru Thurs, Swedish time) They seem to be pretty helpful.

Extending the validity of a petition is generally routine and automatic. You may or may not get a timely reply but if the expiration date is before the interview, the Consular officer will simply extend the validity unless they decide to deny the case.

Generally speaking the consulate has the authority to extend for another 4 mos.
