So... how 'bout that Angels/Mariners game last night?

Good idea!

I'm off to play guitar hero with my son.

Have fun, all!

<------------------ leaves UK forum and everyone breathes easier again!

Aww but I wanted to talk about marmite!! I dun do American sports yet - I didn't even know the above was baseball...

Saying that - I wasn't much into UK sport either apart from cricket (live and short matches - not test matches  ) and the odd spot of footie when England actually qualify

Over here I kinda like the look of basketball but everything else is beyond me...

I only understood cricket during the Ashes in 05 after nearly 10 years of living in the UK. Then I left the country.

I managed to get hubs into baseball during the '06 playoffs when we (Detroit) played the Yankees. I explained that I hated the Yankees with the same passion that he hates Man U. Everything clicked into place after that.

I really liked listening to Test Match Special while I did the tidying up -- it got me into that zen state that only "How It's Made" on Discovery and the Shipping Forecast have ever got me to.

Yeah, the Man U/Yankees analogy is apt. And you know there is no Yankees hater like a lifelong* Red Sox fan.

*Slightly untrue -- I pretended to be a Pittsburgh Pirates fan in 2nd grade because I had a crush on Danny Turbitt, who wore a satin Pirates baseball jacket. All too wrong, on so many levels.

Sh*t girl the number 23 is still sacred in these parts. Remember when you had to have the Air Jordans in the early 90's? The Dream Team (half that team were Bull's players)? Remember...when the Bulls were good? :crying:

Not a Lions fan eh? Are there any left in Detriot?

I have never been a Lions fan, sadly. Although I do remember when Barry Sanders once gave us hope. I always kinda liked the Jordan-era Bulls more than the Pistons - it's hard for me to admit that but it's true :P

When I lived in Chicago I used to go to Wings-Blackhawks games wearing my Wings jersey. The abuse!

LOL...I could imagine the types giving you abuse.

I don't ever see too many Black Hawks fans...I think they come out when the Bears have an especially crappy season.

Some of these guys are still mourning Mike Ditka leaving da Bears.

Have you ever seen the show the SNL superfan skit is based on? I don't know if it's still around, but it was a local cable access show (remember those? I used to appear on one in my hometown!) but the SNL parody wasn't too far off!

I loved the one where they talk about "dat rat-infested sewer-hole, new york city" and how mini-bears with ditka's one arm tied back could still beat the jets

Ohhh - you do that too??!! It's the only thing that gets me to sleep these days - especially when they are making golf clubs *again*

I grew up around cricket - my mum's local social club is a sports club that she started going to when my dad left - I guess it got her out of the house to have some adult conversation but she could still bring us as kids :) My brothers started playing cricket, then she met her partner who played cricket and his sons play cricket too. Mum used to score on a weekend and now she is secretary (on top of being a headteacher - like she hasn't got enough to do  ) for the Bristol Youth League :)

So yeah - I kinda had cricket bred into me from an early age and on a sunny summer's day back home (ok I know they are rare) there is nothing quite like sitting outside with a nice cold pint and watching a 40 over match :luv:

LMAO...I'd never seen the original public access, but my dad being from Chicago I know the mentality...and style for that matter (my dad looks exactly like a super fan only he's not 50 lbs overweight). Down to da Bears satin jacket.

Mini Ditka would beat the Jets something like 55-0 LMAO

Haha...I think the Green Bay fans are the true Jets haters these days.

Lucky we have youtube - the ultimate time machine!

Bill Gleason - ROFL!

I like this description of the Superfans from wikipedia:

Typical debates concerned Mike Ditka versus a hurricane (in this particular debate, the Superfans believed that Ditka could defeat the hurricane, until it was revealed that the name of the hurricane was Hurricane Ditka); who would win in a competition for World Domination – "Da Bearss" or "Da Bullss"; Mike Ditka winning the Indianapolis 500 driving the Bears' team bus; or how many points Michael Jordan could score if he played an entire game by himself while sitting in a recliner.

LOL...the description is brilliant!

Hurricane Ditka would wipe out the contiguous 48 states plus parts of southern Ontario.

God bless public access...we had some good ones back in Lincoln. The local Communist Party leader (can you believe there even was one in Nebraska) Ron Kurtenbach had a show where he basically took calls from wasted and/or high college kids debating politics. He had his phone number printed on a dot matrix banner taped up on the bookshelf behind him. Unfortunatly, there are no you tube clips of his show on there yet. Anyways, sometimes if no one called he would fall asleep and there would be a half hour of the guy napping on TV.

And of course there was the guy who dressed up as a clown and masterbated on public access. Glad I missed that one...

The brilliance of public access is truly missed.

There was a show called "Meetings with the Mayor" in my town. I was selected by my teacher to meet the mayor and interview him on DARE (which was new at the time). So I turn up, with my 80s mall hair and grill him and the local police chief on DARE. My favorite parts are where I constantly refer to people who abuse drugs as "the druggies"

LOL...the "druggies."

The only thing I remember learning from DARE was to give "the cold shoulder." Nasty ole' Peer Pressure!

Did you learn the DARE song?

Stop having interesting conversations while I am working! This behaviour is verboten!

How is that bibliography going? Do you use the Chicago or MLA style citations? :P
