What is the best and cheapest way to get an all day transport ticket around London. Gonna have a whole afternoon/evening to kill post interview either celebrating or sulking!!! Don't intend on venturing further than main tourist areas...guess I'd better takin in more than the shopping whilst I'm down there...did the shopping after medical already. Harrods is the most overhyped pile of poop ever...mind you the food court is amazing and had to have some overpriced sushi whilst I was there with my mammy looking oddly at it until I forced her to just close her eyes and eat it (took harrods to convince my mammy that sushi is gooooood!!!)

First of all, Harrods is Awesome!, and you can get an all day Tube/Bus ticket from around 8 - 12 pounds. As long as it is Zones 1 and 2 (which is most of the touristy places anyway.

Debz, are you coming in by train? If so, you can buy a travelcard at the train station you come into (prob king's cross or euston since you're coming from Scotland). If you're taking the bus you'll probably end up at Victoria Coach Station. From there it's a short walk to Victoria Station, where you can also get a travelcard.Good luck!

One Day Travelcard. Used to retail for about 6 pounds (a year ago, may be more now) after 9.30am. Valid on all transport within zones 1-4. You can ask for other zones too but this does increase the price.

You can get travelcards for before 9.30am but they are more pricey.

thanks. I'll be coming into Euston on the caldonian sleeper. I have a wee pocket tube map and it will only be zones 1 and 2 including a wee visit to an old school friend.

Ok Ok I was slightly more cruel about harrods than it deserved...I was just in awe at the prices of thing...I did buy a wee harrods bag with cats on it! the cats sold it for me! The sushi and morellis ice cream was amazing...I made my mammy eat the sushi...she made me have ice cream....sounds fair to me!!

it may be more trouble than you want to go to for such a short visit, but if you get an Oyster card, travel cards will be cheaper (or you can use pre-pay,. which will stop charging you when you reach the cost of a travelcard)... and while there's a £3 deposit, it's returnable, which you can organise at any tube station ticket counter when you leave :)

otherwise ask for a Zones 1 and 2 travelcard (and yes - buy it after 9.30am if you possibly can; it'll be cheaper)

have fun! I love London :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Ewww sushi... I just can't bring myself.... someone is going to have to do some major convincing...

I'm contemplating waiting until I get packet 4 before I book my medical then just get them both done on the same day... Will be staying overnight in London for one or two nights as well :) Hoping some of you may be in the area so we can meet up but prolly most of you will have already moved :(

Mags is nearer the mark. A one day travelcard for zones 1 and 2 (which is all you'll need) after 9.30am weekdays and all day at weekends is £5.10.

re: Harrod's.

Go to the toy department.

Don't laugh at me! It's a BLAST!! They have salespeople on the floor who are 'big kids' - they try and get you to play with the toys! I tossed a hugh flying disc across the department to one of these dudes! It was great fun and a great memory of our day in London - right up there with the 'whiz-by' of the Queen right outside Hyde Park!

rebeccajo...I loved the toy department too. I'm a big kid myself. I was racing a toy car round a track (i'm sure the guy just let me win!)

Regarding getting ticket after 9.30am...my interview is at 10am so I'm hoping to have already made my way from Euston to bond street and be walking towards the embassy before then. So will just need to pay the extra.

according to TFL, buses 10, 73 and 390 all run between Euston and Bond Street :)

check the map here if you're not sure... and if you get an Oyster card, it will be 90p regardless of when you go :)

I love buses... if you leave yourself enough time, they're easier, and cheaper, and it's much more fun to be able to see where you're going :)

We took the 390 to the Embassy (we lived right near the route's start in Archway). BUT we were travelling at around 6.45am, with minimal traffic. Since you have a 10am interview, I would allow at least an hour, and probably more, to get there as you will be travelling down Oxford Street -- a notorious bottleneck, even in the mornings -- for much of the route, whether 390, 10 or 73. Just a tip!

If you don't mind a little bit of a longer walk (and by that I mean about an extra 10-15 minutes), your best bet is to take the Victoria line straight to Oxford Circus. Two stops, no changes, at most 10 minutes underground. If you'd like to walk down Oxford Street, the nicer shops are generally after Oxford Circus anyway (and Top Shop is right there!). If you'd like a quieter walk, you can have a jaunt through Mayfair before you get to the Embassy -- walk south on Regent Street, take a right on Brook Street or Maddox Street and you'll hit Grosvenor Square.

Just a thought! :)
