You should be filing taxes as Married Filing Together, for immigration purposes, but also because you'll save money on taxes....

It's not a requirement to file taxes jointly.

It is not a requirement at all. You can choose the way you're filing you taxes according to your needs. If it saves you more money when you file jointly do that. If separately, do that instead.

Typically, you're saving money on taxes by filing jointly. However, in certain instances, you can save money by filing separately. The last case mostly happen when there is a big difference in income levels. That way when you're adding up the returns, you'll be taxed at a lower tax bracket.

You can also save money by filing separately when someone has a large medical expense for that year. That way, when applied towards that person's income you can have a bigger tax deduction than when applied towards the common income.

I would recommend a book called "taxes 2008 for dummies". It is wicked cheap and clear ...very clear and you can find it pretty much in any bookstore.

I am intern doing taxes at the moment. Trust me...filing jointly is not a requirement...but it's most of the times tax saving.

Removal of conditions...

Just don't forget to file as "married" if you do decide to file separately!

i agree that sometimes it makes more monetary sense to file seperately in some instances. If thats the case, file as "Married Filing Seperately". Do not select 'Single' or 'Head of Household' (unless you've had a divorce, widow, etc.).

If you select 'Married filing seperately', make sure each of you files your seperate tax return and both of you file your taxes using the same marital status (and send tax transcripts of both people's tax returns when sending your I-751).

It is not a requirement at all. You can choose the way you're filing you taxes according to your needs. If it saves you more money when you file jointly do that. If separately, do that instead.
