They are valid for four months. You need to have your interview within that four months or ask for an extension.

Ok,I'll try and answer this.

The NOA2 is the approval notice of the petition the USC sent to the service center in the beginning. It has a 4 month "expiry" or "suspense" on it.Once an NOA2 is sent to the USC ( as in your friend's case), the approved petition will now be sent to the NVC who will forward it to the appropriate embassy and after that the embassy will start mailing out paperwork to the beneficiary-after all the required paperwork is completed -then the beneficiary will interview and ( hopefully) get the visa approved!

To use my own words here, that basically means that the beneficiary really has to interview within that timeframe ( 4 months), although it can in certain circumstances, it can be extended, by calling the Embassy of the beneficiary.

They put expirations on each step of the immigration process to basically keep the petition and visa application "current".

Don't worry about the 4 month time limit. Usually it all goes through OK within that time. If there is a hold up somewhere in the process, sometimes an extension of the 4 month window can be granted.

Hope this made sense.

edit-Thanks English Muffin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Consulates attempt to schedule interviews within the four month window. If that interview falls outside of that timeframe due to their schedule, there is no penalty to the immigrant for that problem.

Right. One need not request an extension of the validity, nor is any reason needed for the Consular officer to extend the validity except that the visa hasn't been issue yet. No worries.
