I think honesty is always best, but if they ask you to show proof of ties (pay stubs, lease agreement, utility bills, etc), you might get stuck. You need to prove to them you ARE coming back home and not going down there to stay illegally... I would have some kind of paperwork to show proof. I have been going back and forth through the border for the last 7 years, and been asked every question!!

Aug/2001: We met, started dating long distance style and lots of weekend sleepovers!!!

May 16/2004: Married, and still doing weekend sleepovers

Mar 13/2006: Sent off I-130

Mar 28/2006: Rec'vd NOA1

July 7/2006: Rec'vd NOA2

Aug 29/2006: Rec'vd IV Bill

Sep 12-2006: Pay IV Bill

Mar 30/2007: Case Completed at NVC

Jul 18/2007: Case left NVC on way to Montreal

Aug 31/2007: Rec'vd 1st interview letter (the one they DIDN'T send me, due to NVC having my address tagged as bad---this one was hubby's that I got 5 weeks late.)

Aug 9/2007 : 1st Interview Date (of course I missed it)

Sep 15/2007: Rec'vd 2nd interview letter

Sep 26/2007: Medical Appt booked

Oct 5/2007: 2nd Interview scheduled in Montreal

Oct 5/2007: Approved!!!!!!!

Oct 11/2007: Recv'd Visa in hand after hearing doorbell ring

Oct 21/2007: Activated visa

Nov 20/2007: Applied for SSN because it wasn't done for me... UGH!!!

Dec 03/2007: Received SSN in mail... YAHOO!

Apr 11/2008: GC finally arrived

As I posted over at CanuckAbroad an answer to your questions, I'll just elaborate with my own personal experiences here to other answers given. Especially regarding monetary support from your boyfriend. It was always made very clear to me that if I did not have personal funds of my own to support myself on my trip, that could be grounds for denial on entry. If your boyfriend were to write a letter saying he's going to support you for your stay, then that *could* be considered a red flag that you intend to stay beyond your allowed time illegally. Having a bank card and/or credit card of your own is also not enough, they always said to me "well what if it doesn't work in the US, then what do you do? Do you have CASH?"

You have no clear ties to Canada, other than your daughter for whom you do not have legal custody and whom you are leaving behind for 3 months. You've given up your apartment and stored your personal goods, all of which could very well be big red flags with whistles on them to a CBP.

I'm not saying its impossible given your circumstances, however it may not be quite so easy.

its a pretty quiet site!!! Its a better site for work visas. I usually head them to VJ,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

:lol::lol::lol:

I have no idea why it's a b*tch (cause I haven't registered) but that just made me laugh out loud. No idea why. Could be the drugs, though.:lol:

Rant ON!

 I can't register!! :ranting: I'm not going to even bother now. :protest: You know those stupid capture screens with the wonky letters you have to type in to let the site know you aren't a robot, well yeah, the one on that site is just CRAPTACULAR! :bonk:

My avatar was too wide, my signature was too big, blah blah blah blah :dead:

/end rant.

I've been registered there for several years, back when there was oh, maybe 5 members ;) I'll email Matt and let him know there's problems with registering now.

The Canucks in US forum there however has turned into more of a "how do I immigrate to the US" rather than a travellers forum, which was the orginal intent of the site. Its still good to connect with other Canadians living abroad though.
