A Look Inside the Churches of Egypt

AUC Press has published the first fully illustrated book devoted to Christian houses of worship in Egypt.

Taking almost four years to complete, The Churches of Egypt: From the Journey of the Holy Family to the Present Day contains more than 300 photographs by Sherif Sonbol depicting the trail of the holy family from northern Egypt to Aswan, and shows the establishment of various denominations of Christianity in Egypt to the present day.

Written by Professor of Coptic Studies Gawdat Gabra and Coptic art and archaeology specialist Gertrud J.M. Van Loon, the text reflects the latest research on churches in Egypt, including the ancient Coptic churches in Upper Egypt and along the Red Sea, the ancient Coptic churches in Old Cairo, Greek Orthodox churches, Evangelical Coptic churches, and Catholic, Armenian and Anglican churches.

Explaining the reasons for publishing the book, creative director Carolyn Ludwig said that “during our many trips touring Egypt, I began to realize that there is a very rich Christian history in the country, in addition to the Pharaonic and Muslim history.”

Ludwig, who is no stranger to Cairo or AUC, has accompanied her husband, AUC Trustee Bruce Ludwig, on many archeological digs in Cairo and has visited various churches throughout Egypt.

“While working on this book, the story and history of the holy family in Egypt and what happened in the country were very important to me. I felt honored to be doing it as a gift to the Coptic people. Telling this story to Christians in the Western world is very important,” Ludwig said.

I grew up in the Nazarene church. Khallid and I had talked about it, but he did understand the word "Nazarene." On one of my trips to Egypt we were watching a T.V show that said Nazarene. He was like "Oh yeah, there are Nazarene churches in Cairo! I was impressed!

Is it really true that in one certain part of Cairo, bread does not rise and it's the exact point where Mary had asked for bread and was denied? I read about it a long time ago but never actually looked into it too much. Fascinating if it's really true though.

I have not heard of this Doods but I will ask my love and see what he knows.

I went to Borders today to buy a baby's first bible for a baptism I am going to tomorrow and I looked for this book. They did not carry it but would order it for the low low price of only $59.95. LOL I was bummed they did not have it so I could at least look at it before I spend $60.00.
