I sometimes can't tell the difference between certain Scottish and Irish accents, let alone regional English accents...appalling!

Don't worry - one of my American friends once commented that my Australian mate and I sounded almost exactly alike. Naturally we were both insulted *laughing*. I think it has to do with the way we both pronounce vowels as we both have a southernish accent, although we really do not sound alike.

I've tried to teach Ben how to talk in a British accent... but he sounds soooo much like ####### van ####### in Mary Poppins!

My mother has tried to teach him how to say "Harry" properly but he still pronounces it "Hairy"

Hehehe :D I got asked if I was from Oz when I was in NY  I'm from Bristol so you can imagine my accent although it is more of a Gloucestershire accent :) Jeremy never realised there was a Welsh accent until he came here and he couldn't recognise it at all - not sure if he still can't or not - will have to test him!! :D

I usually get asked if i'm Australian...and when they find out i'm English, they ask if I know the queen. Sometimes I tell them that she invites me over for tea all the time. Yoink!

My husband gets a chuckle out of watching peoples' expressions when they hear me speak for the first time. He says that I look like an American so that's what people expect to hear. But, when I speak, people can tell I'm not American but they can't quite place where I'm from. I have more of a Canadian accent than an English one. Except when I'm with my family..... then the English accent becomes more pronounced.

British people canNOT tell the difference between Australian and Kiwi accents, as a rule... the number of times, since I've been living here, that people say something like 'do I detect an antipodean accent...?' and you KNOW they're not game to come down on one or the other

it's weird; it's not like those two accents sound at all alike

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

I think you only learn to distinguish accents well if you have a friend from each place and get used to the differences. Most of the time people don't listen that attentively... myself included.

Haha - Jeremy's aunt asked if I knew Princess Diana  I don't think I could tell the difference between Oz and NZ either - I could prolly tell they were different if I heard them together - same with Canadian and American - I can tell they are different but I just don't know them well enough to really tell

In terms of food... I will miss British cheeses! I know that some are available through the more specialist shops, but it's expensive and they don't carry the same range as I can get here just by walking into an average supermarket. I will also miss Cadburys chocolate and Sainsbury's mini-doughnuts. I don't know what they do to chocolate and doughnuts in the states that is different, but whatever it is seems to upset my stomach. I may actually LOSE weight by moving stateside!

Can anyone recommend good bread? I mostly buy wholemeal Hovis here, but think this will probably be more difficult to get in Kansas.

Edit: And it's weird when people can't understand a fairly mild English accent (Devonshire, but not broad), because I never have any problems understanding any of Mark's family but they often ask me to repeat things - maybe they don't listen as carefully as I do!

I think it depends on the person. My fiancee, who has a fairly heavy borders/geordie accent, is fairly understood by most people. But my mom has no clue what he says. I think it might be exposure...my friends back in Nebraska are generally anglophiles who watch lots of Brit TV, and people here in Chicago usually have some exposure to Brits. But I don't think my mom has really ever met a British person before she met Nicky!

Chas CONSTANTLY has people thinking he's from Australia!!

When I was living in Belgium I met a South African guy who'd lived in Australia for 5 years or something.... and his first question to me was "so, what part of Australia are you from".

Me:  the part that's in England?
