Translation of Documents!

Hey guys,

When you were gathering the documents to send with your I-129F, where did you get the documents translated into English(if your fiance's language isn't english, of course)?? Did your fiance do it in her/his country or your guys did it in the US?

I need to translate a few things into English(from Portuguese) and I'm not sure if I should do it here in Brazil or find someone to do it in the US.

My fiancee's divorce certificate had to be translated from Indonesian to English. I found a list of approved translators on her embassy website and she used one of those. I prefer to use a certified translator recommended by the embassy, then I felt comfortable there would be no issues. Hope this helps...

If you can't find translators in the where you're at, try going to the local university foreign language department. Someone there probably speak Portuguese.

The place of translation does not matter as long as the translator is willing to sign the translation saying he/she is fluent in the language being translated.

Well, there are a lot of people here in my city that will translate documents into English but I wasn't sure if it'd be better to get it done in the US.

It is not necessary to use a certified translator. It is only necessary that the one doing the translation is competent in the language and can certify that the document is accurate.

13. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I typed name , certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and .............. languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled..............

Signature

Date Typed Name

Address

Yeah I know it doesn't need to be notarized. Well in fact, I work as a translator I just assumed it'd be better not to use myself.... hehe

But these translators here in my city can usually do both (certified or not certified translations), and the not certified ones are way cheaper!

The only doubt I had was if I should get it done here in Brazil or ask my fiance to find someone to do it for him in the US.

Of course, do what you are comfortable with, but why would it be an issue if you translate the documents?

I'm not sure...... I just wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself. It's probably very silly but I'd rather pay someone who doesn't have any interests in the case. It just feels more profesional.

That is probably a smart thing to do. Translating yourself could potentially get you an RFE.

Yeah that's what the guy that I hired to help us told me too. He gave me a few options on where to get everything translated and I was just wondering what most of the people here on VJ had done.
