Registering your name at the Post Office

Hi all

Just curious if anyone else needed to do this as well. I went to the SSN office Friday and all went fine, it should be in the mail 7-10 days blah blah blah. The last thing she mentioned to us was to ask whether I'm registered at our home address, otherwise they (USPS) would not be able to deliver the SSN in the mail to that name...I assume because it's Gov. mail ?

It was a simple thing to take care of regardless. If you have a Credit Card in your name already, you can do it online, but since I don't have anything in my married name yet, I trotted over to the PO Saturday morning and filled out a little card with the assistance of the Cust service person. It asks you to list everyone who 'should' be receiving mail at that address....so for us, that included Me, my husband, his son and my daughter. Cost $6.90

Not the same as forwarding your mail through Canada Post obviously.

Add this to the list of things to do when you arrive in the US! I have to say that lately, the last few things we've needed to get done - such as the SSN, married name on bank accounts, cards...have been a breeze... maybe all the customer service people were feeling Christmasy, dunno

This is poor communication between federal agencies. There is no way to "register" your name at a post office. I spoke to both the local postmaster and my local carrier about this. They both shrugged their shoulders. They will deliver any piece of mail to the address stated on the envelope unless a forwarding order exists.

If the name at the address doesn't match the name of the letter, the postman will sometimes return it. Especially if the envelop is stamped 'do not forward' like most Gov't mail is. Perhaps that is what they are referring to?

(In other words, if you moved into a house that was occupied previously by your spouse, but not you, they could return your mail. I hope this makes sense)

It's like that with most government IDs, etc. Just get the slip out and change it (for some mailboxes) or go to the post office and make sure that your name is attached to the address. Put both your future married name and your maiden name on the address to be sure. You might just want to tell the letter carrier since the USPS sometimes ( ) screws up these things.

I never had to do that. its weird, cuz on the SSN application, it states "address where your card can be delivered within the next 10-14 days", it doesn't ask for your HOME address. Seeing as my husband is deployed right now and no one there getting the mail, I had the card send to a friends address. The lady at the SSA office thought it was a good idea to do that too... and it arrived within 14 days..

We just put my husband's last name and my maiden name on the inside of the Mail box. We've never had any problems receiving mail either forwarded from Canada or from our old US address.
