hi everyone,

You wouldnt believe my joy after getting the SSC by mail today, but the joy didnt last for long.

Maybe its a commen thing, but I'm not sure, and would very much like to get it all clarified.

On the card it says: " Valid for work only with DHS authorisation", and there is no expiration date!!

So is this a commen thing for a K1 visa, and does it mean I can start work or do I have to get EAD first!!

Yes, that is a common thing. Socia lSecurity card does not expire, and you need to get an EAD before you can work. That is all

you can only work if you have the temp 90 day EAD, which you only receive if JFK was your POE.

your SS card will only be changed once you submit proof to them that you have received your 1 yr EAD or GC.

Hi KML,

If you were given the temporary EAD at your POE, then you can work for 90 days, which is when it will expire. If you did not receive this temporary EAD then you can't work until you process your AOS paperwork along with the request for the EAD. Once you file the paperwork, if you have not heard from them about your EAD after 90 days, you can make an info pass and obtain an early one.

As to the Social Security Card, you can have that statement removed once you have your Green Card or maybe even once you have the EAD. We finally made it to the Social Security Office to apply for my husband's new card without that statement this past Monday and it was painless and he should have his new one in 7 to 10 days.

Just wanted to post that my husband received his new social security card in today's mail. Now that was fast. e left there Monday afternoon and he received his in Saturday's morning mail.

No, the number will NOT change, and yes, they will issue you a new card w/o the statement once you have your I-551.

Yes, you can work. And an employer can hire you if you can show that you've applied for an EAD, then you have 90 days to produce the EAD.

It's the documentary requirements that's the trick to the whole thing.
